Video Support

Review clips alongside photos, mark your keepers, and copy them to delivery folders. These controls are for Mac; video and Live Photo playback from folders and Apple Photos is also available on iPad and iPhone.

Play a Video

Open a clip in Full View.

  • Click the video or its play/pause button to start or pause playback. Move the pointer over the video to show the controls.
  • Drag the timeline to choose a different point in the clip.
  • Press Shift + ← / → to jump backward/forward five seconds.
  • Enable Settings > Full View > Autoplay videos to start playback when opening a clip or Live Photo. It is off by default.
  • For clips in folders, [ / ] rotate the view left/right. This is temporary and does not change the video file or its exported copies.

Playback works from folders and Apple Photos. Apple Photos may need to download the clip or Live Photo from iCloud first. To play clips from a connected camera or FTP server, first copy them into a local folder and open that folder.

Recognized video extensions include .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .avi, .mkv, and .mts. Playback depends on how the clip was recorded and what your device can play. If a listed clip will not play, try a compatible video player; changing its extension will not convert it.

Live Photos

Open a Live Photo in Full View and click it to play the motion. For Live Photos in folders, keep the original photo and its matching video together with the same base filename. If only the still image appears, check that both files are available and turn off exposure warnings and focus peaking.

To keep the motion when copying from a folder, choose File Type > All. When using Quick Transfer from Apple Photos, choose Export > Originals to export the original photo and matching video. Image-only exports or image conversion do not preserve a complete Live Photo.

Mark Clips and Edit Metadata

Use the usual rating, label, flag, favorite, and reject controls. Add captions or keywords in the IPTC Editor, then click Apply. For clips in folders, these changes use an .xmp file beside the video; keep it with the clip. Other sources follow the rules in Metadata Editing.

File Info can show the recorded capture date, camera, dimensions, and location when available. EXIF corrections are not available for video files in folders; Apple Photos allows changes to the library item’s date and location instead.

Video template variables let you use details such as duration and frame rate in names and text. These describe the recording; they do not change it.

Copy and Organize Clips

For files in folders, choose File Type > Video Only in Quick Transfer or a workflow filter to deliver clips separately from stills. Choose Copy and a separate destination to keep your originals.

Cropping, resizing, Auto Enhance, and watermarks are photo tools, not video editing tools. Leave image-processing steps out of a video-delivery workflow. Strip Metadata does not remove information stored inside video files, such as their recorded location.
