Culling and Review / Statistics

Culling and Review

Statistics

The right panel’s Statistics section shows photo counts you can use as filters.

Click any row to filter the grid down to just those photos. Click it again to remove that filter. Combine different filter groups to narrow results further — for example, camera AND ISO.

Default Sections

These sections appear for all source types:

  • Total Items, Photos, and Videos; Size on Disk is omitted for Apple Photos
  • File types (RAW, JPEG, HEIF, DNG, PNG, TIFF, Video, etc.)
  • Pairing rows under File Types when your source contains a mix of paired and unpaired items
  • Flags (Flagged, Unflagged, Favorited, Non-Favorited, Rejected, Non-Rejected; Locked/Unlocked when applicable)
  • Ratings (Rejected, Unrated, 1–5 stars)
  • Color labels (your six configured label names, plus None)
  • Orientation (Landscape, Portrait, Square), when known

Camera and Capture Sections

These sections support both filesystem and Apple Photos sources. They appear when enabled and the relevant metadata has been loaded:

  • Camera models
  • Lenses (includes a “No lens info” row for files without lens EXIF)
  • ISO values

Optional Sections (Hidden by Default)

Several sections are available but hidden until you enable them. Click the gear icon at the top of the Statistics panel to show or hide:

  • Software
  • Flash (Fired / Not Fired)
  • Focal Length
  • Aperture
  • Exposure Program
  • White Balance
  • Metering Mode
  • GPS presence (Has GPS / No GPS)
  • Keywords

Keywords and the EXIF-based optional sections are available for both filesystem and Apple Photos sources. A section can remain absent if there is no data for it.

Complete the EXIF Statistics

Loading a folder or album does not mean full EXIF has been read for every item. Under EXIF Statistics, check the coverage message: metadata may not be loaded yet, may cover only part of the source, or may cover all loaded items. Cached details and later metadata reads can increase coverage while you work.

  1. Open the source you want to examine and expand Statistics in the right panel.
  2. Use its gear icon to enable camera, lens, ISO, or another EXIF section if necessary.
  3. Check the coverage under EXIF Statistics, then click Scan Remaining if available. It scans the remaining items in the loaded source, not just selected or currently filtered items.
  4. For Apple Photos, review the Scan EXIF Metadata? warning and confirm only when ready to access full assets and download iCloud photos.
  5. Watch the loading count. Cancel stops the scan; already loaded metadata remains available. Afterward, check coverage and any metadata-load errors before trusting the totals.
Warning

Scanning Apple Photos can download full originals from iCloud, taking time, network data, and local storage. A visible thumbnail does not mean the original is already on the device. EXIF-dependent filtering or sorting can also request more metadata; scanning is not the only action that may need it.

Even complete coverage does not guarantee a camera, lens, or ISO value in every file. No Lens Info means the loaded metadata lacks lens information; unscanned items should not be treated as confirmed missing values.

Interactive Filtering

  • Click once to apply that row as a filter
  • Click again to remove it
  • Combine different filter groups to narrow results — for example, camera AND ISO
  • Select alternative values such as four and five stars to match either value (OR)

Examples:

  • Click RAW + Favorited → only favorited RAW files
  • Click Canon EOS R5 + ISO 3200 → only high-ISO shots from that body
  • Click Rating 5 + Green label → your top-rated green-labeled selects

Active filters are highlighted visually in the panel. Use the toolbar Clear button to remove all active filters at once.

Collapsible Sections

Every section can be expanded or collapsed independently. PhotoCuller remembers the expansion state across sessions, so you can keep frequently used sections open and collapse the rest.

Important Behavior

  • In an ordinary folder or album tab, totals describe the loaded source, not just your selection or filtered matches.
  • A RAW+JPEG pair is one item but can appear in more than one file-type count; adding file-type rows need not equal Total Items.
  • Stats update as metadata loads and you change culling decisions or remove items.
  • EXIF filtering can change the browser results as missing details are resolved. Incomplete coverage is not proof that the other items fail the filter.
  • Stack grouping and preset previews change what the browser shows; check the active filters and preview mode when results seem unexpected.
Tip

Use Statistics as your second-pass tool: do a quick first-pass rating across the whole set, then click stat rows to isolate your picks, problem exposures, or specific camera bodies.
